The Way of Liberation in Zen Buddhism by Alan Watts was originally published in1955 by the American Academy of Asian Studies in San Francisco, and appeared in it’s second edition published as part of the Alan Watts Journal series in 1972. It was one of his early explorations of Zen ideas, preceding his more comprehensive book The Way of Zen. It has remained a rare collectible due to its two very limited print runs, and the second edition features his calligraphic lettering on the cover, and was designed by his daughter Joan Watts, produced by Dharma Press in Emeryville, California, and published by Watts’ Society for Comparative Philosophy.

This booklet captures Watts' initial attempt to introduce Zen principles in a concise, approachable format tailored to Western audiences, reflecting his early influence as he began establishing himself as a bridge between Eastern philosophies and Western thinkers. Later, in 1972, it was reprinted Volume II, Issue 1of his Journal series, further cementing its significance in the evolution of Watts’ thought.

Condition: New, with some rust on the binding staples due to many years of storage abroad Alan’s ferryboat, the SS Vallejo, in Sausalito, California.
